- Slowly decomposes in the presence of oxygen to form carbon dioxide at 600-700oC
- Burns only at high temperature
- Normally unaffected by acids, dry chlorine gas or molten alkali at low red heat
- Strong oxidants such as a mixture of hot nitric acid and potassium chlorate will oxidize it completely
