Dedication to eyecare is a tradition we take pride in, a tradition we cherish and endeavour to continue over the years. It was a humble beginning in 1899 when Naoroji Jehangir Baliwalla started a small optical shop at Kalbadevi. He was joined by his brother Pirosha who was a skilled craftsman and personally handcrafted optical frames. In 1913, Naoroji's son, Pirojsha, formed a partnership with Homi Guzder and Baliwalla and Homi was born, which later became a private limited company in 1940. Today it is the third and fourth generations of both families who are carrying forward this legacy. It is not known exactly when spectacles first came into existence, but the first known bespectacled figure is that of a Dominican friar portrayed in 1252. History has shown spectacles are not just visual aids but have been a statement of the fashion of the day - they are a wardrobe for the eyes. In the eighteenth century elaborate and richly decorated lorgnettes were a status symbol of the times, a fashion accessory worn even by those who did not have impaired eyesight. Glasses are effective facial wear. Faces lacking personality can take on a character from the frames they wear. There are some people who are hard to imagine without glasses, like Woody Allen or John Lennon. Others cannot be reconciled with their new image when they wear spectacles (we advise them to try contacts!) The current fashion in frames is a blend of simplicity and elegance. Baliwalla & Homi stocks a wide variety of designer labels - Aramani, Gucci, Vercase, Mont Blanc to name just a few, as well as a budget range of quality frames, both imported and locally manufactured. There are frames to suite all pockets and personalities. A winning combination is of aesthetics and modern day technology. A host of new state-of-the-art lenses are now available. Sun sensors and third generation transitions are the latest in plastic photochromics. Varilux Panamic is a fifth generation progressive lens which is the ultimate in visual comfort. A wide range of high index materials make high powered lenses thinner and lighter than ever before. Sophisticated coatings enhance appearance and visual performance of lenses. Dispensing of such products needs knowledge, expertise and precision which we, at Baliwalla & Homi, strive to excel in. Over the past century we have witnesses the changing faces of fashion and incredible advancements in technology, but our commitment to customer care shall remain unchanged, with that extra bit of personal touch just for you.
